Spring and Summer Decorating Tips

Spring / Summer

They don’t call it spring cleaning for no reason.

The theme of this season is to “de-clutter”. During the colder winter months we like to surround ourselves with the things that make us feel warm. Naturally, that tends to go beyond simply wrapping ourselves in a warm sweater or throwing an extra quilt on the bed. Along with holiday decorations, warm pillows, and other items we tend find ourselves surrounded by a lot of unintended clutter. While this is not necessarily bad, it can make you feel closed-in and maybe even a little claustrophobic.

So, take some time this spring to look at your home with a critical eye. Pretend you are looking at it for the first time. Follow your eye and see where it goes. What items are making your room feel cramped? What is making the most visual noise? What is not allowing the natural beauty of your home shine through? Most importantly, what in the room doesn’t make you smile?

An easy way to start is by removing those seasonal accessories that never made it back to your storage area. Once those items have been removed, instead of habitually replacing them with the next season’s decorations, select from the remaining accessories only those that feel right for this coming season.

This season is all about opening up and letting the freshness in—not just your windows, but your entire home environment! Use the lightest colors in your existing color palette as your guide. If possible, add an element of a surprise color. Colors like fresh kiwi, refreshing raspberry, the blue of the sky or the color of a lake can really bring a fresh new personality to a room.

Opening up doesn’t necessarily mean having a room with stark minimalist décor. We all have those special items that we’ve collected and wish to display. Don’t get rid of them, but open the space around them. Give them a chance to “breathe” in the spring air and you’ll be surprised how much new life it will bring to your home and to your family.
